Esther Elizabeth Sutter, 90, of Eureka, IL passed away at 9:37 a.m., Monday, June 19, 2017 at Maple Lawn Health Center where she had been a resident since September of 2013.

She was born January 28, 1927 in rural Gridley, IL to Edward C. and Alma (Slagel) Eigsti. She attended rural grade schools in the Gridley area and graduated from Gridley High School in 1944. She then studied at the Mennonite Hospital School of Nursing graduating as an RN in 1948. She was a nurse at Mennonite Hospital in Bloomington, IL until she married Dr. M. Willis Sutter on April 6, 1957. He survives.

Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both her sisters, Eda Shoemaker and Kathryn Reeves and by her brother, Arthur E. Eigsti.

Esther joined her husband’s dental practice in Rantoul, IL and worked with him until they both retired.

Esther was baptized as a teen at the Waldo Mennonite Church in Flanagan, IL. She remained a member there until moving to Rantoul and transferring to the East Bend Mennonite Church in Fisher, IL. When she retired and moved to Eureka she became a part of the Metamora Mennonite Church. She was always active in her church serving as Sunday School and Bible School teacher, Church Librarian and assistant church historian. From 1994 to 2002 she and Willis had short-term voluntary service assignments with the Ten Thousand Villages organization in Akron, PA; Montreat, NC; and Myrtle Beach, SC. In Eureka she volunteered at the ET Cetra Thrift Store until her health failed.

A memorial service will be held at the Metamora Mennonite Church at a later date. Cremation will be accorded and inurnment will be in Hickory Point Cemetery in Metamora.. Argo-Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Sutter Family Memorial Scholarship Fund at Goshen College in Goshen, IN; the Open Arms Food Pantry in Metamora; or the Mennonite College of Nursing in Normal, IL.
