Eva Gray, a spirited caregiver, grandmother and gospel music enthusiast, was born April 2, 1906, to George and Melvina Hutchinson in Cantonment, Fla. She died peacefully in her sleep June, 16, 2010, at the White House Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Orange, N.J., only months after celebrating her 104th birthday. Eva briefly attended the famed Tuskegee Institute (Tuskegee University) in Alabama before returning to Florida and opening her own beauty salon. For over 40 years, she served the Cantonment community, providing the latest beauty services to local women and perfecting her craft. Eva and her husband, the late John R. Snack Gray, raised six sons, Damon, Jerry, Jackie, Willie, Eddie and Kenny. Over the years, the couple reared over 30 foster children and later adopted two daughters, Stephanie and Deborah. Throughout her life, Eva was a spry, active woman and could be seen driving, chopping firewood and dancing well into her 90s. She was also an active Christian and accepted the Lord as her savior at an early age. She was a member of Greater First Baptist Church of Cantonment and attended church services regularly until health ailments limited her mobility. Eva lived in Florida until age 98 before moving to South Orange, N.J., with her son, Willie, and his wife, Doris. Together, they formed a close-knit family unit and Eva enjoyed her golden years watching faith-based TV shows on The Word Network, reading magazines and studying the Bible. Age and declining health did not stifle Evas spirit and she remained witty, even-tempered and kind-hearted until her death. In addition to her husband, Eva was predeceased by her sons Jerry, Jackie and Damon. She leaves to cherish her memories five children, Willie (Doris) of South Orange, N.J., Kenny (Linda) of Cheyenne, Wy., Eddie of East Orange, N.J., Stephanie of Pensacola, Fla., and Deborah of Hampton, Va.; daughters-in-law Joan Gray and Christine Gray and a host of grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, church family and friends.
