Darryl Stephen “Steve” McGee passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on March 29, 2017, in Pendleton, Oregon, at the age of 76.

Steve is survived by his wife of 47 years of marriage, Joanne McGee of Pendleton Oregon; sons Troy McGee, Darin McGee and Rob McGee; daughters Stephenie McGee and Nixie Krusee; 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Steve is preceded in death by his mother Gertrude McGee, father Francis McGee and sister Marylou Webb.

Steve was born on March 6, 1941, in Pendleton, Oregon. He graduated from Pendleton High School in 1959. After moving to the Portland area, Steve began a lifetime career in drag racing along with opening his own auto electric shop in Lake Oswego, Oregon. For more than 62 years Steve built his life around his passion of drag racing and building custom hot rods.

In 1999, Steve and his wife moved back to Pendleton, Oregon, and became owners of the famous Rainbow Café while Steve continued his labor of love for classic custom cars. In 2017, Steve was inducted into the NHRA Hall of Fame, Western Division — a true pioneer in drag racing.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.on Friday, April 21, 2017, at Pendleton Pioneer Chapel. The funeral service is Saturday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with interment at Olney Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Rainbow Cafe. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Steve’s life.
