Twenty three years ago, before Joseph was born, I was asked by his mother if I would be his Godfather. I was honored to take on this role, and was very proud to be his Nino.
When he was little, I used to send him birthday cards with dollar bills inside which equaled the age he was turning. But because I didn't see him as often as I would have liked too, his mom and I would kid each other about what age he was turning.
I remember once when he was about 7 years old, she told me that he was graduating from Middle School that year. Later, when he was turning 11 or so, she said he was just about to graduate from High School. Of course she was kidding, and this was always done in fun, but the real surprise came when I spoke to Joseph on the phone one year and asked him what he wanted for his birthday. I was expecting to hear something like a Power Ranger or even a bicycle, but what he wanted was a Marilyn Manson cd.
To my surprise, I had to reflect back and ask myself… where has the time gone? Joseph is no longer a little boy, and the joking around his mom and I did about him being older, had somehow become a reality.
So, I say this to everyone who reads this… spend time with those you care about. Let them know how important they are to you. Don't be afraid to hug each other, and be sure to tell them how much you love them.
I love you Joseph!
