Elsie Gowan Pirie was a daughter of Alexander Fraser Pirie and Hester Emma McCausland. She was raised in Dundas Ontario with her two brothers, Fraser (Russell Fraser) and Goldie (Goldwin), and sister Jean. As both her parents died when she was very young, in 1901 and 1903, she was raised by her paternal aunt Ada Pirie (Mrs. W. Murdoch).

Elsie married Edward Watson Hachborn of Toronto on June 12th, 1919 at Old St. Andrew's Church, Jarvis St., Toronto. The reception was held at the home of Major and Mrs. Boyce Thompson, 443 Crescent Rd., Toronto. Mrs. Thompson was her aunt (born Ida McCausland) on her mother's side. The Hachborn family had one daughter named Hester who was born in 1921.

Edward Hachborn was a first World War veteran who had served with the B.E.F. as a Major. He was wounded at Messines and Passchendaele. Edward's father was Edward George Hachborn, a well known and successful garment manufacturer in Toronto. E. G. Hachborn Company was located at 50 York Street in Toronto and their family home was at 131 South Drive, Rosedale.

From the Toronto World, published November 6th, 1919:

"Mrs. Edward Watson Hachborn, formerly Miss Elsie Gowan Pirie, received yesterday at her house, 48 Glenholme avenue, for the first time since her marriage, when she wore her wedding gown of white georgette crepe with court train of baronette, embroidered with beads, and a corsage bouquet of violets and pink roses. Mrs. E. G. Hachborn [mother-in-law], who received with her, wore a gown of white and blue shot silk and a black hat. The drawing-room was arranged with bronze chrysanthemums and the tea-table with real lace and pink roses in a silver basket, surrounded with pink shaded candles. Mrs. C. S. Parsons and Mrs. F. McCausland pouring out the tea and coffee, assisted by the bride's sister, Miss Jean Pirie. Miss Evelyn Urquhart, Oakville; Mrs. John Berkeley, Salisbury, England, and Mrs. Murdoch, an aunt of the bride, who was in the drawing-room."

According to family memories, Miss Pirie had a heart defect since childhood. Her father, Alexander Fraser Pirie, had taken her to many specialists, but help was not available at that time. This most likely led to her death at a young age.

A handful of her father's letters remain from 1901 - 1903. These are from the period just after her mother died while Elsie was only a child. These were written to her maternal relatives and mainly to Mr. Pirie's sister-in-law, Ida McCausland (Mrs. Boyce Thompson) and to his brother-in-law, Mr. Boyce Thompson. In these he describes Elsie as very intelligent and doing well in school. He said she had an excellent memory just like her mother.
