The marriage ceremony was performed by William Ussery. The story is that Martin and Sarah went to her home (by horse and buggy) to check on her and found her outside chopping wood. She was very sick. It would have been winter time because the twins were born January 11, 1906. She told her parents she had no way to support her kids. They took Eliza and the children home with them but Eliza died shortly after. Some say from pneumonia. Martin and Sarah became guardians of the four children. Probate records in Hartville at the County Court House-Probate Court Record 769. The records reflect that Martin sold a piece of property that belonged to Eliza ( and subsequently the children) and David Ussery (who was a minor at the time). The court records contained receipts that showed he provided support of the children (i.e. clothing receipts, food receipts, etc.).
Eliza Jane USSERY was born on 5 Aug 1881 in Wright Co. MO. She died Jan 1906 after the 11th day of the month in Wright Co. MO and was buried in Ussery Cemetery near Hartville Mo.Eliza is mother to Winson Van Buren Slavens.
