Robert was the oldest son of Manjedal (Mundijong) pioneer Henry Mead and Dorothy (nee Leng). His father Henry had built a beautiful residence at Whitby Falls in 1850 but after of 5 years of living in isolation, Dorothy became ill and took her four children (including Robert) back to live in Guildford. Dorothy died in Perth in October 1879.

In December 1879, Henry married his common-law wife, Lydia Chuck, who was the mother of Henry's 4 next generation family.

As a young man, Robert chose to return to work in the Serpentine District. He fathered an illegitimate son, Frederick, who was born at Whitby and became part of the next generation of Mead's.

Robert worked for some time near Spencer's Flats above the Serpentine Falls and it is likely that this is where he met his future wife, Elizabeth Baldwin, and they married in 1873. They lived in Happy Valley at Jarrahdale and had 9 children:

Eliza Ellen (1871-1952)illegitimate, born before marriage.
Ann Amelia (1875-1954)
William George (1876-1942)
John Henry (Harry) (1878-?)
Robert James (Jim) (1880-1959)
Aubrey Walter (Swazz) (1883-1963)
Emoline Elizabeth (1885-1977)
Sydney Charles (Charlie) (1888-1912)
Florence Dorothy (1893-1916)

Between 1876-1881 Robert had a pastoral lease and worked as a faller in the timber industry in Jarrahdale. By 1889, he was an orchardist and gardener and in 1894, described himself as a farmer. Robert was well known for his skills in fencing.
