John Quincy Howard, Mr. John or Grand daddy as he was called, was the fifth child born to Marion Francis Louizia "Lula" Winters and John Calhoun "Jack" Howard. The family lived in Mississippi and later moved to Calhoun County, Texas. In 1887, the family moved to the Union Community at Quitman, Louisiana.

John had six sons by his first wife, Cleo. After she died, he married Alice Thornhill. The boys did not favor her and the marriage did not last long. Very little information is know about Alice. Soon after Mack married, he and his bride moved into the house with his Dad. Mary took care of the younger boys. John later married Louella and they had two children, Kenneth and Mary Jane.

During those early years, John worked at the Hodge, La sawmill. He worked on the railroad cars that were used to haul the logs. When the closure of the mill, he went to work for the NLG Railroad working on the trains.

After Mack moved to Houston, Mr. John soon followed. He lived on property next to his son. He was a tall thin gentleman with long slender fingers. You never saw him without his hat...pushed back a little on his forehead. He was a handy man and worked on many homes in the area.

He died on February 20, 1966 in Houston, Texas. He was buried at Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Quitman, La near many of the Howard family members.
