America (Allphin) Bowman was born in Marion Co., Ind daughter of William & Louvisa (White) Allphin. Died in Spring Hill, Benton Co., Oregon. Married Preston H. Bowman Oct 10,1850, Linn Co., Oregon Terr. ,theirs was the first marriage in Linn Co. They were the parents of 7 children; Elizabeth, Nathaniel H.,Nancy,Mary, William H., Maria L., and John A. She was sister of Green W., Luke P., Thomas Z., Milton J., Francis M., and Margaret. Half-sister to Rachel, W.Woodson, and Lydia. In April 1847 along with her parents , 8 siblings and others , they crossed the plains, starting from Amazonia, Mo (north of St. Joseph). In the wagon train was Preston Bowman with his family, who would become her husband. They arrived in the Willamette Valley in Sept 1847 by way of the Barlow Pass. Preston & America settled a claim in Polk Co April 30,1852 (DLC # 4467)
