Jesse L. Gibbs, Sr., 83, of Connersville died Sunday, February 18, 2007 at Reid Hospital, Richmond.

He was born March 10, 1923 in London, KY to Otto, Sr. and Martha M. Bishop Gibbs. In 1942, he graduated from Hazelgreen High School, East Bernstadt, KY. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of Corporal. He was stationed in Germany during World War II and was at the Battle of the Bulge on D-Day. His military decorations included the Purple Heart for wounds received during combat.

On January 30, 1986, he retired from Ford Electronics where he had been employed since 1950. He was a member of the International Union of Electrical Workers, Local 919. He always looked forward to spring and planting his vegetable garden. In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, hunting mushrooms, and going to the Grand Victoria Casino Resort.

Survivors include his wife, the former Patty M. Gray whom he married February 17, 1952; eight children and their spouses: Jesse, Jr. and Ellen Gibbs, Martha Sue Gibbs, Lewis John Hudson, Darlene Kelley and her companion Dexter Thomas; Larry and Margaret Gibbs, all of Connersville; Sara and Archie Brewer of Adamsville, TN; Chester and Jenni Gibbs and Shawn Gibbs, all of Connersville; five sisters: Jewel Dean Gibbs of Brookville; Jeannette Seeley and Ida May Boles, both of Everton; Lilly Edwards of Florida and Alice Heston and her husband, Ray of Cambridge City; 36 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Otto,Jr, Raymond, Fred and Robert Gibbs; and one sister: Margaret Oliver .


Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm Thursday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Homes, Myers Chapel, Connersville.

Interment will follow in Laurel North Cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted by the Fayette County Veteran Council. Friends may visit Wednesday from 4 to 8 pm at the funeral home where memorial contributions can be made to the Fayette County Senior Center.
