Edward was the fourth child of fifteen children born to Peter Lee and Nancy Hulin Cross. He was the boy in fraternal twins, the only set of twins in the fifteen children.

Edward married Florence Alberta Fry and they had three children.

Edward chose burial at sea and his ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
