Jacob Bornhaus was born in Datterode, Hesse-Kassel. He was in the Regiment Erbprinz which was sent to America during the War of Independence. He was taken prisoner by the Americans, and deserted from the British Army in May 1783, and remained in America, settling in the German Settlement in Loudoun County, Va. along with his cousin Christoph Bornhaus.

The New Jerusalem Lutheran Church parish register shows Jacob was buried on March 1, 1802, aged 42 years, 10 months, and 17 days.
