US Congressman. After various mining and lumber business interest, he studied law and was admitted to the Michigan bar in 1895. He practiced law in Michigan before moving to Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1896 and then to Utah in 1902. In Utah, he organized several industrial organizations and was nominated by the Progressives and Democrats. As a forceful speaker, he fought the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad through the Interstate Commerce Commission and won outlet victories for the state's coal-mining industry. In 1915, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-fourth, Sixty-fifth, and Sixty-sixth Congresses and served until 1921. After leaving Washington, he retired to Wendell, Idaho and developed extensive coal-mining projects. He died of a stroke.
