Rose M. Conway, 87, of Clearfield, UT, passed away peacefully at 9 pm on May 16, 2017.
She was born Rose Marie Buckholz on the 16th day of July, 1929, in Brooklyn, Kings, New York to Eva Benneter (nee Buckholz). She spent part of her childhood being raised in a Catholic convent where they gave her the name Elizabeth. The nuns loved her and said Rose looked like Shirley Temple because of her tight curly ringlets of hair.
Rose fell in love with John Patrick Conway and they began a life together in Imperial Beach, CA. They eloped at the San Diego Courthouse on July 9th 1952. Their home was always full of kids, cousins, siblings and love. Around 1965 John was transferred to Treasure Island so the family moved to military housing in Pleasanton, CA. After which they purchased a house in Dublin, CA.
Rose loved to go out dancing and favored the music of Dean Martin and Patsy Cline. She was an avid reader of mystery novels, and an excellent solver of crossword puzzles and word searches. She was also a dedicated viewer of “Walker, Texas Ranger” and “Murder She Wrote.”
In their retirement, her and her husband became liveaboards in Antioch, CA on their beautiful 46 ft long Sea Ranger named the “Johnny Rose.” They also volunteered together in their local Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla.
Rose’s absolute favorite pastime was taking trips to Fitzgerald’s casino in Reno, NV and the Rainbow/Peppermill casino in Wendover, NV. She loved hitting those jackpots, and she did so frequently.
After the passing of her husband in 2001, Rose moved to Utah. While here she became the grandma we all loved to dote on. Some of her favorite spots to lunch with her family were Sandy’s in Ogden (now closed) and Cracker Barrel in Layton.
She spent her final years in Clearfield as a resident of Chancellor Gardens Assisted Living and then later their Memory Care area where she had an active social life and lots of friends. She couldn’t remember their names or faces because of her Alzheimer’s but these friends spoke to her family often about what a riot Rose was and how they never stopped laughing when they were with her.
Overall, Rose was a beloved matriarch in our family. She was a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, godmother and friend. She brought life to any party, especially family reunions, and always made us laugh with her antics.
She is survived by her four children; Pamela, Johnny, Barbara (Bill) and Kelly; seven grandchildren; Tracy (Michelle), Brian (Janell), Jonathan (Michelle), Katie, Benjamin, Kristie (Shane) and Jaclyn (James); and more beautiful great grandchildren than we can keep track of.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary.
