Mississippi Governor. Known as Mike Conner, he graduated from the University of Mississippi, in 1910, with a law degree from Yale University, in 1913 and establishing a legal career in Seminary, Mississippi. He was a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, (1916-24). In 1931, he was elected as a Democrat the 44th Governor of Mississippi, serving until 1936. During his term, problems resulting from the Depression were dealt with, an emergency revenue act was sanctioned, tourism was promoted, the states’ universities and colleges accreditation was restored and a surplus in the state treasury was achieved. After leaving office, he retired from politics and was the first commissioner of the Southern Conference, (1940-46).
