RALEIGH, N.C. - Irene Elizabeth Nelson, former owner of Irene's Beauty Shop in Kingsville, died Feb. 12, 2007. She was 90.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Mitchell of San Antonio, and Lynda Winstead of Raleigh; a brother, Howard Whitworth of Bastrop; two sisters, Ethel McClanahan of Kingsville, and Lois Lentz of Conroe; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Feb. 16 at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, Kingsville.

Burial followed in Chamberlain Cemetery, Kingsville, TX.

" Irene graduated from Bastrop High School in 1935. In 1937 while living with her brother, Horace and family, she attended Dual Arts Beauty College in Austin, TX and received her certificate in June of that year. She was employed by Lena Sckanhals ( later Rabensburg) of Bastrop,Texas. In 1943 she met her future husband, John Louis Nelson, of Bear River, MN who was with the Medical Corps of Camp Swift near Bastrop. They were married Feb.5, 1944 and in 1945 he was discharged from the Army. They moved to northern Minnesota where they lived for a year and half. Their oldest daughter, Judy Ann was born in Hibbing MN May 6, 1947. They moved to Bastrop, TX in August of that year and later moved to Kingsville,TX. where their youngest daughter, Lynda Beth, was born January 15, 1954. Irene worked at Trants Beauty Shop for three and half years and in 1958 opened a shop in her home which she owned and operated for nine years. Her husband worked as a mechanic-welder. He died September 19, 1990. Irene still resides in their home in Kingsville. Submitted by Irene Whitworth Nelson."

Irene also wrote she attended school at Eight Live Oak and Watterson, first going by buggy, then horse back with her sister, Audrey, and neighbor, Mildred Hefner. ----- With the help of her sister Ethel paying her $100.00 tuition Irene enrolled in Dual Arts in Austin, TX.

Due to he health conditions Irene moved to her daughter's home,Lynda, in NC in Sep 2004.
