Alice Catherine (Branson) Hartman, age 94, of Franklin, West Virginia passed away at Pendleton Manor in Franklin on Sunday, May 14, 2017. Alice was born April 8, 1923 at Lost River, WV, the daughter of the late Harper Lionel and Freddie Webster Branson.
On December 18, 1945 at Lost River, WV, she married her husband of 73+ years, Woodrow Hartman, who survives in Franklin.
She is also survived by one son, William (Bill) Hartman of Franklin. Alice was a doting grandmother to her one granddaughter, Heidi (Jon Diaz) Hartman of Charlotte, NC.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, James, four brothers, George, William, John and Tom and two sisters, Betty Jean (Charles) Wolfe and Joan (Jerry) Weese. She is survived by one sister, Elinor (Dorman) Dove of Virginia Beach, VA and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She graduated from the Hardy County Schools and Potomac State College. Her public work life included many jobs, including Farmers Home Administration in Franklin, teaching school at Goshen, and working for Camick Lumber Company in Elkins, WV. Because of her love for Franklin and its’ improvement, she served on the Franklin Town Council from 1988 to 1993 and served as Mayor of Franklin from 1994 to 2002. She served as Chair of Region 8 Solid Waste Authority in Petersburg, WV, retiring in 2003, having participated in the oversight and the completion of various improvement projects in the Potomac Highlands area. She and Woodrow owned and operated Hartman’s Furniture in Franklin from 1953 to 2008 and Hartman’s Cable from 1956 to 1988, where she served as bookkeeper.
Alice was creative, talented and very articulate, creating dozens of quilts and many, many articles of various types of handiwork, including cross stitching, tole painting, baskets, oil paintings and much more. Sharing her talents included the formation of the Pendleton Crafters and teaching classes in basket making, tole painting, stained glass art, upholstery and quilting. Her love of reading and history led to a great interest in genealogy and the completion of many family trees. For many years, she chaired the Treasure Mountain Festival Quilt Show and won many first place awards for her period window displays during the Treasure Mountain Festival.
In 1996, she received the Distinguished West Virginian of the Year Award from Governor Gaston Caperton.
She was a member of the Franklin Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she served on many committees and was active in the church’s Relief Society.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Final rites will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, May 19, 2017 at Franklin Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Jay Hartman and Elder David Hartman officiating.
Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.
