Philadelphia was born circa 1780 at Mount Vernon. Her mother Betty was a dower slave of First Lady Martha Dandridge Custis Washington. She was a sister of Ona Maria "Oney" Judge Staines, a runaway slave, whose mistress was First Lady, Martha Washington. Philadelphia married Washington Custis Costin, son of Ann Dandridge Costin Holmes, a possible half-sister of First Lady Martha Washington. Philadelphia Costin, her two daughters Louisa age 2 and Ann age 4 months, were granted emancipation on 13 June 1807 by Thomas Law, the former husband of her mistress, Elizabeth Custis Law, granddaughter of First Lady Martha Washington ~

Memorial# 140701095

Reported by: Sharon Pajka on Jun 06, 2017
General problem: I searched the entire cemetery and could not find the grave
Details: Many of the grave stones are broken or lying on their backs facing up so the names and identifying information has been rubbed off. The section in the woods has ivy covering most of the ground; it's steep and muddy.
