Marion Riess aka Battleship Kate was a well-known New York City tattooed character who kept the company of Sands Street sailors and otherwise made her living as a thief. She was such a notable persona, her legend was captured in a Papier-mache trade figure painted with tattoos. This figure, which once sat in the tattoo shop front of Norfolk, Virginia's Cap Coleman, and was thought lost, unexpectedly turned up at Skinner's auction house in 2014.
