Madison Riley Shoaf was the eight of fourteen known children of John Jacob (went by Jacob) Shoaf (1811-1874) and Elizabeth Brinkley (1817-1858), who married on 01 Jan 1833 at Davidson County, North Carolina. After Elizabeth died, Jacob remarried to Sarah Mary Mayab (1838-1910) on 16 Jul 1863 at Davidson County, North Carolina and had an additional six known children.

Madison married his cousin Martha Sink Shoaf (1844-1930) on 19 Oct 1865 at Davidson County, North Carolina. Madison and Martha were the parents of ten known children, namely:

1. Mary Elizabeth Shoaf (1866-1874)
2 David Alpheus Shoaf (1868-1951)
3 Lillie Glendora Shoaf Motsinger (1871-1908)
4 Sallie Shoaf Biesecker (1874-1947)
5 Minnie Lutz Shoaf Conrad (1876-1918)
6 Corinna Shoaf Holmes (1879-1926)
7 Ida Belle Shoaf Melchor (1882-1956)
