Susan Shoaf was the second of fourteen known children of John Jacob (went by Jacob) Shoaf (1811-1874) and Elizabeth Brinkley (1817-1858), who married on 01 Jan 1833 at Davidson County, North Carolina. After Elizabeth died, Jacob remarried to Sarah Mary Mayab (1838-1910) on 16 Jul 1863 at Davidson County, North Carolina and had an additional six known children.

Susan married Levi McCrary (1822-1892) on 30 Dec 1852 at Davidson County, North Carolina. Susan and Levi were the parents of eight known children, namely:

1. Jacob Lindsay McCrary (1854-1929)
2. Sarah Frances McCrary Sowers (1856-1915)
3. Eliza J. McCrary (1858-1865)
4. John W. McCrary (1860-1862)
5. Martha C. McCrary Beck (1862-1934)
6. Robert Lee McCrary (1865-1932)
7. Harriett Delphina ("Della") McCrary Hedrick (1867-1935)
8. Jennie Alice McCrary Fritts (1873-1898)

The Dispatch, Wednesday, February 19, 1908, page 4 – DIED Saturday night, Mrs. Susan McCrary, widow of Mr. Levi McCrary, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs J F Hedrick of Lexington, age 78. Mrs. McCrary had been sick a week, and pneumonia developed at the last. Services were held at the house on Monday by Rev. A L Stanford, and Rev J W Clegg conducted the burial at Ebenezer, the old family church and graveyard. A large number of friends and relatives were present. Mrs. McCrary is survived by five children: Messrs. J L and R Lee McCrary, and Mrs J F Hedrick, Mrs P E Sowers, and Mrs David Beck .
