Joel John Thompson III, 69, of Hutto, passed away peacefully with his daughters at his side on Sunday, May 7, 2017.

Joel, known to many as Johnny, was born September 28, 1947, in Waco to Joel Thompson Jr. and Judy Thompson. He graduated from Waco High School in 1966. He also graduated with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from American Technological University in Killeen (later known as Texas A&M University-Central Texas).

He served two years in the Marines, being discharged with the rank of Sergeant. After the Marines he was a Waco policeman for four years, then moved to Austin, and retired from the Austin Police Department after 25 years as a Detective Sergeant.

He was an avid Harley-Davidson rider and he dearly loved his three pups. Joel was most proud to be a card-carrying Choctaw Indian and Choctaw Tribal member, descendant of Hy-Yip-Atonka (Second Pond), before the name changed to Thompson.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

He is survived by his four daughters, Jennifer Elder (Chris), Laura Thompson, Joelle Aguilar (Mike), and Jessica Thompson (Steven); eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and his brother Phil Thompson (Gwen).
