George Henry Webber
April 11, 1939 - May 3, 2017
George Henry Webber was a lifelong resident of Merced, Calif. His family were among the early pioneers of the West, including veteran settlers of Hopeton. His great grandfather, Jefferson Fruit, was a well-known Merced resident, serving as Deputy Sheriff, Justice of the Peace, and County Recorder. He also raised fine horses.
His father, the late Frances Webber, welcomed him into the world about the same time his wife Hilda (George's mother) passed. George was raised by Harry and Mildred Latour of Merced.
George enjoyed playing basketball in high school, earning him the nickname Hooper. He also played baseball on the high school team. He attended Fresno City College for a year, before starting a family while working as a gas station attendant. He later went on to have a long, successful career as a businessman working in the title company industry.
He spent many years as a member and past-president of the Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of the Merced Booster Club, and played a role in bringing the UC Merced campus to the community. George coached Little League for many years, including for his sons' Andrew and Jeff. In retirement, he managed several rental properties, enjoyed playing golf, met a regular group of friends for coffee, and spent many happy hours with his wife Dianna on trips or relaxing at home.
George was a true gentleman, and he will be remembered for his love of baseball, the ever-present hum of his AM radio, and his dedication to his community. He will be missed by his family, especially Dianna. He was the love of her life. They were married for more than 27 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents Frances and Hilda Webber, his sister Carolyn Webber Schori, and his niece Diane Schori.
George is survived by his wife Dianna Webber. He leaves behind four children, including the eldest Shelley Corteville of Springfield, Oregon; Andrew Webber (Suzi) of Livermore, Calif.; Julie Hart of Spokane, Washington; and Jeff Webber (Amy) of Merced. His five grandchildren include Kayla Webber (26), Peter Hart (21), Drew Webber (20), Makenzie Webber (17), and Dylan Webber (14).
He is survived by his stepdaughter, Becky Barcellos of Fresno, and stepgranchildren, Jacob and Brandon. Other survivors include stepchildren (Dianna's children), Bret Chandler (Laurie) of Livermore and Lisa Neely (Dan) of Pennsylvania, and stepgranchildren, Sean, Kayla, Kyle, and Blake. And he is survived by his nephew Stephen Schori (Aileen) and their children.
A service honoring George will be held at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home at 1490 B Street, Merced, on May 12, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. A reception will follow at the Merced Country Club at 3:00 p.m. Private interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Merced.
