Capt. Nicholas "Cowboy" Megura was a famous ace with the 4th Fighter Group/ 334th Fighter Squadron based at Debden base in England during WW II. Megura would total 15.58 victories with the 4th FG from July 3, 1943-May 22, 1944. On May 22 this report was made concerning Megura's last flight-- "While attacking a group of ME-109’s with some P-38’s his a/c was mistaken for an ME-109 and damaged by a Lightning during combat. With glycol streaming from his engine, he made for Sweden. Successfully made a forced landing in Kalmar in SE Sweden. Interned. Returned to Debden 28 JUN 44, taken of Ops. " Megura would be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross (5 OLC) , Air Medal w/ (3 OLC) Purple Heart, WW II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle East Campaign Medal and would retire from the Air Force a Lt. Colonel. His contributions to the famous "Eagle Squadrons" of the 4th Fighter Group are chronicled in many books and articles.
