John Birk Dies In Jacksonville
Mattoon, Ill. - March 2. - John Birk, a former resident of this city, died at 3:20 o'clock Friday afternoon in the Jacksonville hospital where he had been a patient since last November. He was 79 years old.
Funeral services will be conducted here at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Marshall avenue Christian church with burial to be in the Rardin cemetery at Rardin, Illinois.
Mr. Birk, born in Ohio, came while a youth to Illinois with his parents. They settled on a farm in Jasper county where Mr. Birk grew to manhood. He farmed in that vicinity and in 1889 married Miss Naomi Tipton of Rardin. She died in 1937. Mr. Birk retired from active farming15 years ago and moved to West Liberty. He came to Mattoon in 1937 and resided here for a year of two before returning to West Liberty to again make his home.
Surviving are two sons, Jonathan of Decatur, and E. A. Birk of Sedalia, Mo.
