Former Sutton, NE resident, Philip Martin Lewis Jr., “Marty,” passed away Friday, April 21, 2017, in Lincoln, NE, at the age of 86. Military graveside services were held at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at the Sutton Cemetery in Sutton, NE, with Pastor Mary Scott officiating and military honors by the American Legion Argonne Post #61. Visitation was Tuesday, April 25, 2017, from 1-8 p.m., and Wednesday, April 26, 2017, with the family present from 11 a.m. until noon at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton, NE. A reception luncheon was served immediately following the graveside service at the American Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church in Sutton, NE, American Legion Argonne Post #61, Sutton NE, Grand Lodge at the Preserve Scholarship Fund, Lincoln, NE, or donor’s choice. Condolences may be left at www.suttonmemorial.com Philip M. Lewis Jr.,“Marty,” was born Dec. 9, 1930, in Hastings, NE, to Philip M. Lewis and Elva G. Carter Lewis Krause. Marty grew up in Omaha and graduated from Omaha Central in 1949, and the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1953, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and the Innocence Society. Marty proudly served as an Air Force Captain near Tokyo, Japan. Upon finishing his active duty, he continued in the reserves. He moved to Sutton in November 1955, to begin his banking career. He was the second generation to run the family bank, Sutton State Bank. In 1963, he married Winifred “Winnie” Schmidt. Marty was a dedicated and active member of his community, where he served on City Council and as Mayor of Sutton. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and served as the church treasurer for over 40 years. He held various positions in 40 et 8, up to the ranks of past Grand Chef for the Nebraska chapter. He was a member and held many positions within the American Legion Argonne Post #61. Marty and Winnie spent their days traveling with their 40 et 8 friends. Marty enjoyed bird watching, gardening, Husker football and participating in the American Legion events. Marty is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Winifred “Winnie” Lewis, his parents, Philip M. Lewis and Elva G Krause; stepfather, Albert Krause and stepsister, Willa Hall. He is survived by his children, Melanie Lewis of New Port Richey, FL; Michele Serr (Steve) of Grafton, NE; and Vicki Kraai (Jon) of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren, Kristine Sedersten (Chris); Philip Serr; Abby Kuntz and Emily Kraai; great-grandchildren, Kayden Kauk and Klara Sedersten.
