He was born at the Bushkill at Forks,PA. (now Palmer Twp.)He had a brother ANDREW J. HAY.
Jacob in 1854 married ANNIE (Nee)WILSON daughter of Alexander Wilson, SR. They had 7 children and at the time of his death only 4 were living. Eldest son was THOMAS A. H.HAY, dau: ANNIE WEINBERG HAY who married COL. ASA DICKENSON of Hackensack, NJ, son: WILLIAM O. HAY and dau: IDA HAY who married Wm. C. ATWATER,Jr. of Falls River, MA. (I do not know the names of the deceased children).
On Nov. 17,1852 Jacob began his own business, THE HAY BOOT & SHOE CO. in Easton,Pa.,after working a few years for someone else, and later J. HAY & SONS also in Easton, Pa. where he & his sons worked. He was a businesman for exactly 42 years as he died the same date he had begun his business 42 years earlier. He died just after completing the sale of a property he had.
Apparently there was another Jacob Hay ,a contemporary, who also lived in Easton and he should not be confused with this man.
Mr. Hay in 1861 tried to enlist to serve his country in the Civil War but was rejected due to eyesight problems. He was later in 1863 allowed to enlist as apparently the requirements had been relaxed. He went in as a private with CO. D 138th Regiment of the Pennsylvanis Volunteers but while in the field was unanimously elected Captain. He put a sign in his store window saying it was closed not by the sherrif but because he & all his staff were serving in the war. When he returned he reopened for business.
He was a Mason and belonged to Eason Lodge NO. 152 F, and A.M. Easton Chapter 173 R, Hugh de Paynes Commandery NO. 19 K.T. and a member of the IOOF (Internaional Organiztion of Odd Fellows).
