Early Life: Jay was born February 27, 1932, in Crescent, Utah, to Allen Alldredge and Stella Bernice Nelson Atwood, the third of their four children. In 1937, the Atwood family moved to Inglewood, California. In 1941, Jay, along with his sisters, were sealed to their parents in the Saint George Utah Temple. Jay loved sports, but his favorite was baseball. He played baseball, basketball and touch football. In 1951, Jay graduated from Inglewood High School.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: He enrolled in El Camino Junior College, earning his Associate of Arts degree in 1951. Jay continued his education at his beloved University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He received his Bachelors of Arts degree in Public Administration in June 1953. In June 1974, Jay received his master's degree in public administration from California State University at Sacramento. Jay began his military service in the United States Air Force, enlisting in 1953. He completed Officer Candidate School in 1955. During his military service, he worked in the fields of radar operations, air and photo intelligence, as well as administration and personnel. Jay married his high school sweetheart, Anna Mae Lovegren, on June 30, 1953, in the Salt Lake Temple. Their first home was in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was transferred to Montana at a radar site. By this time, Jay and Anna Mae were expecting their first child. Cynthia Jean was born on November 4, 1954, in Inglewood, California. While Jay was stationed in New Hampshire, their second child, Ronald Franklin, was born on June 16, 1956, at the Kittery Maine Naval Station. Jay resigned his commission from the Air Force in 1957. That same year, Jay, Anna Mae and their two children moved to Sacramento, California. It was at this time that he began his career with the State of California with the Personnel Board. On October 12, 1960, Jay and Anna Mae were blessed with the birth of twin boys, Craig William and Bruce James. In 1962, Jay made a career change and moved his family to Southern California to work for the Los Angeles City Schools as a Personnel Analyst. On October 29, 1962, a daughter, Kristina Marie was born. Soon after, the Atwood family moved back to Sacramento, where Jay resumed his career with the California State Personnel Board. He would remain with the Personnel Board for 33 years, until his retirement in 1992. On March 30, 1964, Kevin Jay was born (passed away in 1995). Jay and Anna Mae's last child, Jennifer Lee was born on January 29, 1968. Jay served in many capacities for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Gospel and his family were his most valued treasures. Jay Franklin Atwood passed away on April 19, 2017, due to complications from a fall he sustained six weeks prior to his passing. He was 85.
Survived By: His loving wife, Anna Mae, Lehi; children: Cindy (Dennis), Lehi; Ron (Debbie), Bonners Ferry, ID; Craig (Carol), Sacramento, CA; Bruce (Julie), Murry, UT; Kris (James), Lehi; Jennifer (Ron), South Jordan, UT; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul (Janis); and several nieces and nephews.
