Henry is the son of John Jacob & Elizabeth (Keller) Bowman, II. He was the 4th child of eight children. Him and his siblings: Rebecca (Leinbach), Nancy, Jacob, Henry, Elizabeth, Barbara Ann (Starnes), Samuel, and Joseph Newman.

He married Barbara Starnes on 15 Jan 1800 in Greeneville, Greene, Tennessee. They had 12 children: John Squire, Jacob H., Barsheba, Dennis, Elizabeth, Nancy, Polly, Jane, Margaret Sarah, Ann, Celia and Clarissa.
