A rope manufacturer who in 1861 is living on Newgate St. Morpeth. Joseph took over the family rope works in St.Ann's,City Rd. Newcastle on the death of his father, another Joseph Crawhall, in 1853. The works was very successful and had won a medal in the 1851 Great Exhibition. The factory chimney was even twisted in the shape of a rope. Joseph sold the business in 1887, although it still continued to expand making ropes and steel cables for the shipping industry.
The family name continues in Crawhall Road in the East end of Newcastle.
