An important artist who was born at Wansbeck House, Newgate St., Morpeth, trained in London. He specialised in painting birds and animals. He was not appreciated in his lifetime and rejected by the art establishment. He was influenced by the Glasgow Boys and Post Impressionists.
Interestingly his Grandfather, another Joseph Crawhall, was noted for his artistic doodles which filled the margins of his account books.
