Stephen enlisted in the Union Army, aged 44 years in August 1862, mustered in September 6, 1862 as a Pvt. with Company I. 123rd Illinois Infantry, which became part of Wilder's Brigade. In April 1863 he was promoted to Sgt. He was killed in the battle of Farmington, Tennessee on October 7, 1863.

Stephen married Christine Evans 7 Oct 1841, in Athens, Ohio. Together they had 4 children, Clinton Jehu born 1842 in Athens, Sarah Jane born 1843, George Louis born 1846, and Kitty Lorine in 1849, all born in Ohio.
In 1849 Stephen and the family moved to Charleston, Illinois. Christine died in 1854.
March 8, 1855 he married Elizabeth A. Adams in Charleston. Together they had three children, Laura Ann, b.1857 d. 1924, Martha A, b.1858 d. 1859, and Emma D, b.1860 d. 1863. Martha and Emma are buried on their maternal grandfather's plot, John Jefferson Adams, in Pleasant Prairie Cemetery in Coles County, Illinois.

Gravesite Details

Stephen's stone has been knocked over but unbroken; several other graves; cemetery quite overgrown, difficult to see, needs clearing and stone repair. Marker difficult to read.
