I found their blended family on the 1900 Census, living in Argos, Marshall Co., Indiana. Albert Chapman, aged 49, was noted as an engineer. Mary, aged 47, reported that she had had five children, but that only three had survived to that census. There with their father/mother and step-father/step-mother were Mary's two daughters Ocie and Katie Love, aged 19 and 13, Albert and Mary's daughter Arvilla (Lola A. on the record), aged 7, and Albert's son Clark, aged 19.
The family was still living in Argos when the 1910 Census was taken. Albert Chapman, aged 59, was noted as a stationary engineer. Augusta (aka Mary), aged 57, reported that she had had five children, only two of whom were still living. Only Arvilla, aged 18, was still at home with her parents.
A year after that census, Arvilla married Coral Ellsworth Hoffman on 17 Jan 1911. Coral was the son of Jacob J. Hoffman and Susannah Romig. Coral and Arvilla welcomed son Gilbert about a year after they married.
On his 5 Jun 1917 WWI registration, Coral, aged 30, reported that he was living at 323 N. Walnut St. in Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana, and engaged in farm labor for Schlosser Brothers. Noted was a wife and child. He was described as tall and of medium build, with light brown eyes and dark brown hair.
On 29 Jan 1919, Arvilla lost her father Albert Chapman, aged 68.
By the 1920 Census, the family had relocated and was living on Dubail St. in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Coral (Carrol on the record), aged 32, was working as a machinist for a lathe works. Arvilla, aged 27, was home with 9-year-old Gilbert.
On 18 Oct 1925, Arvilla's mother Mary married third husband Amos Gordon.
By the 1930 Census, the family had moved back to Plymouth in Marshall County, and was renting at 800 Walnut Street. Coral, aged 43, was working as a machinist for Servall or Sewall Company. Arvilla (Lola on the record), aged 38, was keeping house. Son Gilbert, aged 18, was still at home, and was working as a stenographer for a body company.
On 13 Feb 1934, Arvilla lost her mother Mary Gordon, aged 80.
When the 1940 Census takers took to the streets with their oversize notebooks, Coral and Arvilla were renting a place at 402 ½ W. Jefferson St. in Plymouth. Coral, aged 52, was working as a mechanic for Stoker Manufacturing Company. Arvilla, aged 48, was also working, employed as a saleswoman for a grocery store. Son Gilbert was out on his own by then, and may have been married to wife Catherine by then.
On his 27 Apr 1942 WWII registration, Coral, aged 55, was still at their W. Jefferson St. address, and was working for Clizbe Brothers Manufacturing. Wife Lola (aka Arvilla) was noted as that person who would always know his address. He measured in at 5' 11" tall, and weighed in at 155 lbs. His eyes were still brown, but his hair was noted as black this time.
Coral lived to aged 66, passing into the light on 8 Feb 1953. Arvilla lived another twelve years without her helpmate and companion, crossing over on 22 Jan 1965, aged 73.
