Albuquerque Mayor Harry Kinney, age 81.

Harry worked at Sandia Laboratory for 17 years, but was always actively involved in politics.

Beginning in 1957 he served as a member of the Bernalillo County Commission, and later was elected to the Albuquerque City Commission.

He served as Mayor from 1974 to 1977 and again from 1981 to 1985, and ran for numerous other positions including State Land Commissioner and Governor. He was President Elect of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, but was unable to serve when he lost his position as mayor. Harry loved Albuquerque and New Mexico and was involved in numerous organizations throughout his life. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity at UNM and was a lifelong member of Rotary International.

He remained close to friends from Raton, where he grew up, from his years at UNM, and to the hundreds of City employees he worked with over the years. A proud member of the US Navy, Harry served in the Korean War and remained active in the Naval Reserve.

Harry was proud of initiating the International Balloon Fiesta, acquiring the Elena Gallegos land grant as open space, and for acquiring water rights to help assure adequate water for the city. Most of all, after his family, he loved the people of Albuquerque.
