Daniel J. Vaughn was born about July 1852, perhaps in Elk Creek Township, Erie county, Pennsylvania, the son of Daniel and Sylvia Green Vaughn.

In 1860 Daniel was living in his father's household in Elk Creek Township, Erie county, Pennsylvania. He was seven years old when the census enumerator stopped by on June seventh. In the 1900 census he stated that he was born in the month of July. Those two data points are the basis for his approximated birthdate.

Daniel was married several times. First, on December 21, 1873, in Genoa Township, Tuscola county, Michigan to Mary Jane Lawrence. Daniel and Mary had at least four children: Rosetta, Charles, Daniel and Arvilla.

Daniel married Blanche Ursula Greene on February 4, 1893 in Linwood, Bay county, Michigan. It is not known whether they had any children.

On May 12, 1897 Daniel married Isabelle Trombley in Bay City, Bay county, Michigan.

In 1900 Daniel and Isabell are found in Turner Township, Arenac county, Michigan. No one else is listed as part of their household. Isabell stated that she has born nine children, of whom only two are still alive. Daniel is working as a laborer.

Daniel married Arvilla A. White in Lake Ann, Grand Traverse county, Michigan on January 22, 1906. Arvilla had previously been married to George W. Crawford. At the time of the wedding Daniel was residing in Interlochen, Michigan. Daniel's sister, Rosetta and her husband Bert Smith were the witnesses to the marriage.

Two weeks later, Daniel's mother Sylvia died at Lake Ann and was buried in the cemetery there,

In 1910 Daniel is enumerated in the household of his brother-in-law, Bert E. Smith and his sister, Rosetta. Daniel is described as having been married for four years and is working in a factory in Almira, Benzie county, Michigan.

At that point the trail runs cold. The search for the rest of the story continues.
