Beverly Heacock Brooks died peacefully in her sleep on April 4, 2017.

Bev, as she was known to her friends and family, was born May 12, 1924 in San Francisco, California to Lyman Dunlap Heacock and Phyllis Delight (Curtaz) Heacock.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Colonel Waldo W. Brooks, Jr. (USA, Retired); and brother and sister, Lyman Dunlap Heacock, Jr. and Nancy Heacock Milliken.

Bev was adventurous at the earliest of age, going to the Russian River country-side during the summers and often traveling alone by street car around San Francisco to visit her grandparents and other relatives.

She also had a great sense of humor. Not having a middle name, at her graduation from Lowell Senior High School, she added a family name and is listed in the 1941 graduating class as Beverly Bartleson Heacock. Bev was admitted to Stanford and the University of California at Berkley. In lieu of going to college in California, she traveled to Washington, DC and began war time work for the U.S. Government. Aways with a thirst for knowledge, Bev soon enrolled at the University of Maryland where her life took a different turn.

Bev met her husband and lifelong partner, Waldo (Wally) at College Park and they faced a choice for their future life profession—manager of a Maryland farm (following in Wally’s father’s footsteps) or return to active duty as a U.S. Army officer. Wally had served in the Army during World War II and enjoyed the challenges it provided. Without hesitation, Bev (while willing to be a farmer’s wife) opted for the life of uncertainty and travel. Shortly thereafter, Bev was on her way to join Wally in post-war Japan. Thus began a life of travel to foreign countries and multiple states for Bev and Wally and their four children during their over thirty year Army career.

In 1972, after Wally’s retirement from active duty, they settled in Columbia, SC. Bev was always active, working for a local dress store, volunteering at military activities, and was an active member of various bridge groups. They continued to travel after Wally’s retirement. They were off to Europe, Asia and Africa, many times with her dear sister, Nancy, and brother-in-law, “Ken” Milliken. When not traveling she would spend hours on the phone laughing with her sister.

In Columbia, Bev found volunteer activities that were just up her alley. She served as a docent at the SC State Museum, and for over two decades, Bev educated and entertained visitors to the Museum. She enjoyed learning the history of the new exhibits, often researching small details that she would add to the tour. Bev also was a leading member and three time President of the Columbia Ikebana International Chapter 182, a Japanese flower arrangement organization. Renown for her open and welcoming personality, Bev trained a generation of Ikebana members. Bev initiated the long standing relationship of Ikebana and the SC State Fair where tens of thousands of attendees have marveled at the intricate flower arrangements.

Bev is survived by her four children who proudly accept the title of Army brats: Maudeen Brooks Duvall (David) with one son, Adam; Waldo (Chip) W. Brooks III (Patricia) with four children, Justin (Jena), Kristin (Brian Lochhead), Tracey (Chris Shepherd), and Kyle; Steven Gordon Brooks (Nancy), with four children, Eddie, Merri, Corey, and Ryan; and Craig Wilson Brooks. Bev is also survived by 12 great grandchildren.

Bev was close to so many friends in Columbia and the family appreciates their friendship and love. A special thanks to the many caregivers from Agape Senior Services in Columbia who provided her support over the last six months.

Funeral services will be at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209 on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 10:00 AM with Reverend Mark Bredholt officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park following the chapel service. The family will receive friends at a reception in the Community Room of the Funeral Home following the graveside service.
