Charles R. Gibbs, age 93, of Oneonta, AL., passed away on April 7, 2017. Mr. Gibbs was a member of The First Baptist Church of Oneonta for 34 years. He retired from Royal Cup Coffee after more than 15 years of service. He was the former President of The Alabama State Singing Convention; he loved to sing and sang all over the state of Alabama and the Southeast. He was a self taught piano player and learned to read shape notes on his own. He served in the United States Army during WW II and Korea. He enjoyed raising his beagle dogs and judged many Field Trials over the years, and he also enjoyed rabbit hunting. Preceding him in death were his parents John and Nora Towns Gibbs; sisters Pluma Allred, Eva McCay, Fannie Smith and Rebecca Rutherford; brothers Chalmer, Fred, Ralph and Emery Gibbs. Survivors include his wife Annice Steele Gibbs of Oneonta; daughters Sarah Rhodes (Robert) of Pell City, Susan Gail Jackson (Tom) of Acworth, GA., Dianne Wideman of Trussville, Sherry Agnew (Jimmy) of Trussville and Bobbie Sue Jones (Steve) of Trussville; twelve grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 10, 2017 at Lemley Funeral Home from 12 noon until 1 PM. Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Lemley Funeral Home at 1 PM with Dr. Larry Gipson officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Lemley Funeral Home and Crematory directing.
