Notes from the River Falls Journal - River Falls, Wisconsin. George Mapes was born in New York. He moved to Baltimore Maryland and then to Kinnikinnic township just north of River Falls in 1857 joining his two brothers James (65420167) and Walter Mapes who were there since 1850 being the third settlers to the area. He moved to the village of River Falls, Wisconsin in 1866 and took over the Pioneer Store, the first store in the village ever. He closed the store in the fall and winter of 1875. In November 1879 he sold his house to John D. Putnam and moved to Waverly, Virginia.
