Good Wife or "Goody" Bassett was one of those tragic people who was hanged in the witchcraft frenzy in New England. Connecticut Colonial Records, vol. 1, p. 220: Gen'l Court Held May 15, 1651 states: "The Gouvernor (Haynes), Mr. Cullick and Mr. Clarke are desired to goe downe to Stratford to keepe Courte uppon the tryall of Goody Bassett for her life and if the Gouvernor cannott goe, then Mr. Wells is to goe in his roome."

Mary was married to Robert Bassett, also born in England, in 1638. They had among others, a son Robert Bassett (1640-1720) who married Elizabeth Riggs (1668-1744)
