The Index-Journal (Greenwood, SC) Sat, 22 Dec 1945 to 9 Mar 1946

– James Lomax, sixth and youngest child of the first settler of the name. Was born about 1755. He married Jane Dilworth of Rockingham County, where some of their children were born. They then removed to Abbeville County, SC, where their younger children were born. The wife of James Lomax, Sr was born 1755 and died Aug 13, 1823 (1828?). James Lomax died Aug 9, 1835. James Lomax, Sr and his wife Jane Dilworth Lomax had 8 children: (After Jane died, James Sr married 2nd Lucy)

Although the full maiden name of the second wife (Lucy) is not known, she gave the neighborhood name to the Lomax Family Burying Ground which is located a very short distance from the home of her husband. The old burying ground is still referred to as the “Lucy Burying Ground” or the “Old Lucy Graveyard”

Lucy, was a belle of this section and was remembered by her first name for her beauty and vivacity.

This old graveyard is about a mile south of the very handsome, in its day, old home of Col James Lomax, Jr. The graveyard is surrounded by a rock wall some five feet high with an iron gate. It is unusual in arrangement in that many of the tombstones are slabs of marble inserted on the inside of the rock wall. However, Lucy Lomax, 2nd wife of James Lomax Sr, is buried almost in the center of the enclosure and has an ornate monument. She is buried at the foot of the grave of the 1st wife of James Lomax, Sr. The marble slab to the memory of James Lomax, Sr is the first one on the left after entering the gate. Others are all grouped around on the inside of the rock wall. The stone to the memory of James Lomax, Sr ways he died 9th of August, 1835 in the 80th year of his age. This shows he was born in 1755. The stone to his first wife, Jane Dilworth Lomas, says: “Jane (Dilworth) Lomax departed this life on the 13th of August 1823 in the 68th year of her age”.

The date of the 2nd marriage to Lucy is not known. She was born Mar 22, 1782 and died Jan 11, 1853.
Also buried here are Col James Lomax, Jr, his wife Matilda Hargrave Lomax (she died in 1828) and 2 of their children: John D Lomax and Mary Ann Lomax, both died in infancy.

This pioneer settler was also known as Col James Lomax. His son, James Lomax, Jr, is the better known with this title. He became quite well-to-do and built the handsome house on a site about a mile west from the home of his father.
