Harold "Red" Christman Howell, Jr., 90, of Boise, Idaho passed away peacefully Friday morning, March 31, 2017. Harold was born in Omaha, Nebraska, May 6, 1926, to Harold Christman Howell, Sr. and Rosalina Hulda Zbinden Howell. He grew up in Logan, Utah, Twin Falls and Boise, Idaho. He is survived by his younger siblings, Lamont "Monty" Howell (Violet) of Idaho Falls, and Varna (Craig) Heesch of Salt Lake.
He joined the Merchant Marines shortly after his 17th birthday, which allowed him to travel around the world.
He served his first LDS mission from 1947 to 1949 in the Western States Mission (the same place his father served).
Harold married Helen Carver in the Logan Temple on April 10, 1950. Harold and Helen had eight children: Rosemary McKee, Chris (Donna), Annie (Philip) Oswald, Elaine (Mark) Jaynes, David (Michelle), Donna (Nick) Mills, Robert (Chele), and John (Kimberly).
He served faithfully throughout his life in various leadership callings at the ward, stake, and mission levels, including Elders Quorum President, counselor in a bishopric, ward clerk, and as the Stake Sunday School President. He also served diligently in several temple assignments. Harold and Helen also served as a missionary couple in the Utah Salt Lake City Mission from 1989 to 1990. Helen passed away August 21, 1990.
Harold spent most of his career working as an account representative for Dubois Chemical. Harold was an avid motorcyclist and rode the Idaho mountain trails up until just a few months ago. He also loved spending time with family. He has twenty-eight grandchildren, forty-eight great grandchildren; two more expected this summer and one great grandchild passed away last year.
Harold later married Edna Cheney on June 4, 1994. Edna’s children, Jane Cheney Groves (Ryan), John Cheney (Anne), James Cheney (Jana), Jerry Cheney (Troy), along with thirteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren also call him Dad and Grandpa.
A viewing will be held Sunday evening, April 9, 2017 from 6-8 pm in the LDS Chapel at 190 S. Locust Grove Rd., Meridian, ID. Funeral Services will be Monday, April 10, 2017 at 11 am, family will greet friends from 10-10:45 am prior to the service. Interment will be on Tuesday April 11, 2017 at 11 am, at Fielding Memorial Park in Idaho Falls. A reception will follow from 12:30-2:00 pm in the Idaho Falls LDS West Stake building at 2040 Brentwood Drive.
