My great-great grandfather, Mordecai Carroll, III was born on October 26, 1809, in Randolph, North Carolina, when his father, Mordecai II, was 39 and his mother, Nancy, was 19. He married Lydia T. Taflinger on December 10, 1835, in Jeffersonville, Indiana and had five children during their marriage.

Mordecai had moved west from North Carolina with his parents Mordecai Edward Carroll II and Nancy Charity Dickey to Clark Co., Indiana, before making the trip to Council Bluffs, Iowa which had become one of the main jump-off points for the 1500-plus-mile, 3 to 6-month California Trail wagon trek traveling 6 to 20 miles per day, depending on weather, terrain, and other factors. After the birth of their youngest daughter, Elizabeth C Doty in Marion in May of 1858, the California Trail is likely the route followed by the Doty’s and Carroll’s as they moved from Marion County, Iowa to California and settled in Franklin.

14 family members living under the same roof: the Doty’s: Ben and Nancy with children Mary Ellen, Laura, Elizabeth and Julia. The Carrolls: Mordecai and Lydia with children Barbara (with her husband Frank Gross and their children Lydia and John Henry) Jacob and Mordecai Riley.

Mordecai’s grandson – my great grandfather – John Wilmer Doty would be the first California Doty to survive childhood. John was born in Dec of 1861 under the rains that brought Franklin the Great Flood that inundated the region.

Nearly two years later, Mordecai Carroll drown in the Mokelumne River crossing with his wagon and team on December 19, 1863, near Franklin, California, when he was 54 years old. By 1873 all of the Doty’s and most of the Carroll’s (including Mordecai's wife Lydia) had moved to the Central Coast and settled between Cambria and San Simeon.
