A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, in the Chapel of Pennybyrn at Maryfield with the Most Reverend Peter J. Jugis, J.C.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Charlotte as Celebrant. Fellow priests will concelebrate.
He was born March 12, 1925, in Blanchardville, Wisconsin and attended St. Edward's Grade School and two years at St. Catherine's High School. He then entered Mary Knoll Seminary in Ohio and completed High School there. Fr. Gavigan transferred to Holy Ghost Monastery in Conyers, Georgia to join his younger brother, Eugene. He was ordained a Priest on May 3, 1953. Fr. Gavigan left the Monastery after 20 years because of poor health and joined the diocese of Charlotte.
Affectionately known as Father Pat, he served as parish priest in Tryon, Brevard, and Lincolnton. Locally he served as pastor at Our Lady of Grace and St. Benedict's Catholic Churches in Greensboro and at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in High Point. He then moved to Pennybyrn at Maryfield because of his Parkinson's Disease.
Surviving are his brother, Richard and sister-in-law, Claire Gavigan of Palatine, Illinois and many nieces and nephews.
