LOYAL TRIBUNE (Loyal, Clark County, Wis.) 02/09/1911

--------- Brasier, John F. (1 JUN 1834 - 2 FEB 1911)

The death angel has once more visited our community (Loyal, Clark County, Wis.) and taken from our midst another old settler, when on Thursday, Feb. 2, 1911, the soul of John F. Brasier, freed from the frail and suffering body of clay entered into its well earned rest.

Mr. Brasier was born in Canada June 1, 1834. When a boy of eleven his parents moved to Hartford, Wis., where they resided for a few years. In 1860 he went to Sheboygan Co., where he settled on a farm.

On Dec. 25, 1862, he was married to Miss Mary A. Shaver; to this union were born ten children, of whom seven are living, Jennie E. Philpott, who resides near Loyal, Robert E. of Chippewa Falls, Mrs. Harriet E. Fisher of Battle Creek, Mich., Emily S. Huffman of Lincoln, Nebraska, Albon E. who resides in Loyal, Olive E. Irvine of the town of Beaver and Ray E. of Minocqua.

He moved with his family to Clark County, Wis. in the fall of 1879, where he made his home until his death. Beside the children named above he leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Parker of the town of Beaver, many grandchildren and other near relatives.

Mr. Brasier was a man of splendid Christian character, a kind husband, a loving father and a good and helpful neighbor. Such a man, of broad charity, kin heart and gentle manner dying is a distinct loss to any community.

For years he had been a patient sufferer, confined to the house and at the last his sufferings were most intense, yet he bore it all with Christian fortitude and submission.

The funeral was held in the Methodist Church Sunday, Feb. 5th, at one o'clock. Rev. E. R. Kildow preached from the test so often upon the lips of the departed and so very appropriate, "Blessed are the dead who died in the Lord."

In reviewing the life of this highly respected citizen, we will go back to the history of his parents. His father, John Brasier, was born in Nova Scotia; he married Elizabeth Pegg, a native of the State of Pennsylvania, and they removed from Canada to Hartford, Washington County, Wisconsin, in the year, 1845. There they underwent all the hardships and privations incident to pioneer life. They had born to them a family of five children: Charles, Sarah, Elizabeth, William and John F. The parents were faithful members of the Christian Church, and people of great integrity of character. The father died in Washington County, Wisconsin, and the mother passed her last days at the home of a daughter in Clark County, Wisconsin.

John F. Brasier, son of the above, was born in Canada West, June 1, 1834, and lived until his twelfth year in his native home; his parents then removed to Hartford, Washington County, Wisconsin and he remained there until 1860. IN that year he went to Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, and made it his home the two decades following. In 1880 we find him in Clark County, where he bought 160 acres of land adjacent to the village of Loyal.

Throughout his life he has followed farming, and he has now succeeded in placing under cultivation ninety acres of his land. In the beginning of his business career he had no capital, but was obliged to rely upon his own industry and energy for success. He has been quite prosperous, and is well worthy of the high esteem in which he is held. In politics he votes the Republican ticket.

In 1863, November 24, he enlisted as a private in Company I, First Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and served until the close of the war. He was mustered out at Davenport, Iowa, and received his final discharge June 13, 1865. He participated in the Georgia campaign, and was in many minor battles and skirmishes.

Mr. Brasier was united in marriage, December 25, 1862, to Miss Mary A. Shaver, of Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Mrs. Brasier was born in the State of New York in 1845, and is a daughter of James and Charlotte (Gordon) Shaver. Mr. and Mrs. Brasier are the parents of ten children: Jennie E., Robert E., Charlotte E., Phoebe E., Hattie E., Emily E., Alvin E., Lloyd E., Olive E. and Ray E.

The father and mother are both worthy and consistent members of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
