Shook Sr., John W., Age 91, of Horseheads, NY passed away peacefully with his family by his side on March 22, 2017 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, NY. John was born in Elmira on October 6, 1925, son of the late Lloyd and Viola (VanGelder) Shook. John was also predeceased by his wife, Barbara in 2011. John served his country in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War. He served on the USS Thorn and the USS Midway, receiving American Theater, Good Conduct, European Theater, Pacific Theater "7 Stars" and the Philippine Liberation "2 Stars" ribbons, along with the Victory Medal for WWII. John also received Korean Service "1 Star," China Service and the United Nations Service Medals for serving in the Korean War. John retired from the maintenance Dept. with Trayer Products in Elmira after many years of service. He was a Past Commander and longtime member of the American Legion Post #154 in Elmira Heights and a long standing member with the Chemung County Veterans Honor Guard. John was a wonderful man and will be missed by all that knew him. Family and friends are invited to call Monday, March 27th from 12 to 1 pm at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 1 pm. Interment will follow in Woodlawn National Cemetery with full military honors.
