He was killed by a land mine in Germany at the Battle of the Bulge.

Obit-July 30, 1948

A memorial service will be held today (Friday) at the Methodist Church in Carlton for Pfc. Damon King who was killed in action near Serrig, Germany on March 16, 1945 and whose remains arrived in the States aboard the USS Oglethorpe Victory, July 9. A military funeral will be accorded Pfc. King with the Cunnigham Post of the American Legion officiating. Interment will be made in the Carlton Cemetery.

Pfc. King was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus H. King of Carlton and enlisted in the Army May 18, 1944. He trained at Camp Wolters and Camp Fannin and after going overseas, took part in the famous Battle of the Bulge with the 26th Division of the Third Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart, two battle stars, the bronze EAME ribbon and Combat Infantryman's badge.
