James emigrated to the Colony in 1859 with his parents and siblings. Traveling as assisted immigrants the family arrived in Port Jackson, Sidney on 6 Jan 1860 on the ship "Alfred".


James married Mary Josephine nee McDonald on 2 Feb 1880 in St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Nimmitabel, NSW. They had 10 (ten), children, James, James Angus, Alfred, William, Henry J., Sarah Ann, Mary Jane, Catherine, Richard, and, Joseph Glen.
