Professor Larry Ray Sherman, 82, of Scranton, died Saturday at home. He is survived by his wife, the former Irene H. Pitman, and together they celebrated 50 years of marriage.
Born in Easton, Pa., he was son of the late Ray Earl and Estella Wirebach Sherman. In 1952, he graduated from Nazareth High School. Following high school graduation, Larry went on to attend Lafayette College, where he received his bachelor's degree. He then furthered his education at the University of Utah with a master's degree and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wyoming. Larry was a professor at the University of Ohio, Akron, and retired from the University of Scranton. During his tenure at the University of Scranton, his emphasis was on the chemical effects of the body for the nursing and physical therapists programs.
He was a very active parishioner of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Olyphant. Larry was a writer for the Orthodox Herald and was an acclaimed publisher of five novels on WWII. His passion in life was scouting. At an early age, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. This was the beginning of a 75-year era, which led to many awards, including the Silver Beaver award for making an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council, the District Award of Merit, the Silver Antelope and Buffalo Awards and the George Meany Award. For many years, he was a member of the Order of the Arrow, Lowwapaneu Lodge 191. The Northeastern Pa. Council of Boy Scouts dedicated the property that surrounds the District Scout House in honor of Larry for all his dedication. He was also very active with the Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting and was an active supporter of the Williamsburg Foundation.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Phyllis Bock and Susan Bittner and husband, David, all of Nazareth, Pa.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, David Robert Sherman
Family and friends are invited to attend Larry's funeral, which will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 600 E. Lackawanna Ave., Olyphant, with services by the Very Rev. Vladimir Fetcho, pastor. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor. Parastas services will be at 6:45.
