Charles F. Romero age 78, a longtime resident of Las Vegas, NM died suddenly on Thursday March 16, after suffering a fatal heart attack. He was born on September 16, 1938 in Las Vegas, New Mexico to Albert Romero and Eugenia (Jean) Montano.
He is survived by his daughters: Crystal Eschbaugh-Romero of Las Vegas, NM; Deanna "DJ" Romero of Seattle, WA; son: Daniel Galindre and wife Maria Elena of Las Vegas, NM; grandchildren: Caleb, Seth, Gregory, Hayden, Zoe, Allison, Niesha, Sky, Katelyn, Chachi, and Mark; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers: Alice Lujan and husband Jr.; Maggie Benavidez all of Las Vegas; Marvin Romero and wife Georgianna; Gilbert Romero; Mary Helen Bustos and husband Bobby; Doraine Rivera; all of Albuquerque, NM; extended family members from the; Romero, Lujan, Valdez, Bustos families, and numerous: nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Charles was a Staff Sergeant/non-commissioned officer in the 1st Marine Division, the oldest and largest active duty division of the United States Marine Corp. He served 11 years, surviving 3 tours in Vietnam. He served in Da Nang, Vietnam with the 1st Military Police Battalion Fleet Marine Force. He was the proud, Platoon Commander in charge of the German Shepard unit of the Second Sentry Dog Plt. This unit provided security for the helicopter pads, and outer defense perimeter for Marine Aircraft Group – 36 at Phu Bai, Vietnam in 1967. He was quoted saying, "the sentry dog(s) services in Vietnam are invaluable". Charles was a dedicated trainer, and handler for the sentry dogs in the USMC. His love of dogs continued throughout his life. His service to our country was invaluable, and his achievements are too many to mention. Charles traveled the world with his military career, and was happy to settle down in his hometown, where he was self-employed for several years as a truck-driver. His civilian career path also led him to a position with the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute, working with a vulnerable population of developmentally disabled adults. He later worked as a security guard, retiring from Luna Community College.
Charlie was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, and special to so many people. He is described by his brothers and sisters as the "patriarch" of the family. His passing was sudden and unexpected, and he will be sadly missed. Always a marine, his care and compassion for others never failed. He was always there in times of need, and helped everyone he could. He was a strong man, and a respected member of his family and community.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather Florencio Aragon, parents: Albert Romero and Eugenia Montano; sister: Sylvia Valdez; twin brother: Clarence Romero, and his former wife Hazel Romero.
Public visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 9:00 - 9:45 am at Rogers Mortuary Chapel in Las Vegas, NM. Services will follow directly at 10:00 am with Pastor Lewis Holguin Officiating. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM at 1:30 pm with the following serving as casket bearers, Gregory Baker, Sky Galindre, Caleb Eschbaugh, Hayden Alter, Seth Eschbaugh and Kevin Eschbaugh. Serving as honorary bearers will be all his remaining grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A reception will follow, to be announced at a later date.
