"Rose Therese McNamee, Enjoyed Ballroom Dancing"

Rose Therese McNamee was the widow of a Cleveland Fire Department battalion chief and the mother of a fire hero. Her son John was a Cleveland firefighter who died when the historic Hawley House Hotel burned down in 1974. He had led two elderly residents to safety, but succumbed after he gave his oxygen mask to a third man, who survived the blaze.

Mrs. McNamee died Thursday at the Aristocrat South nursing home. She was 82.

She was born in Cleveland and was reared on the West Side of Cleveland. She enjoyed ballroom dancing. She liked to tell her children and grandchildren about winning a $5 gold piece in a dance contest when she was 20. She also entertained them by playing the piano.

Mrs. McNamee was married for 54 years to her husband, Walter, who was a Fire Department battalion chief. They moved from the West Side to North Olmsted in 1964. Mrs. McNamee's husband died in 1990.

Mrs. McNamee is survived by daughters Jeanne Baker of Brook Park, Patricia Tomlinson of Bonita Springs, Fla., Gerri Hazlett of Berea, Kathleen of North Olmsted and Lois of North Olmsted: 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Brendan Catholic Church, Brendan Lane and Kenny Ave., North Olmsted. Arrangements are being handled by the Chambers funeral home of Cleveland.
